ASTON, PA -- Things couldn’t be going better for the Philadelphia Little Flyers at the start of the 2018-19 season.

The Little Flyers came into the 2018-19 season looking for redemption. The team had been to three straight Frozen Finals but didn’t have a championship trophy to show for it. New head coach Mark Catron was optimistic of his team’s chances moving forward, but I’m not even he was able to predict the month that the Little Flyers had to open the season.

The Little Flyers sit undefeated at 9-0-0 and six points clear of rivals Philadelphia Revolution for first in the South Division of the EHL’s Mid-Atlantic Conference.

“Our team, our roster, just like every other team, is really rounding into form,” said Catron. “We aren’t going to sit here and complain about a 9-0-0 start, but we know we have work to do to get to where we want to go.”

One of the surprising contributors for the Little Flyers is rookie Mikey Giampapa, a ’00 forward who leads the EHL in goals and is second in the league in scoring through his first nine games.

On the flip side, a not so surprising contributor is goaltender Brendahn Brawley who has been lights-out in between the pipes. The ’98 prospect from Morton, PA is off to a 6-0-0 start with two shutouts. He is second in the EHL with a 1.37 goals against average and a 0.954 save percentage.

“We knew that having Brawley back was going to be important for us, but Mikey has been a pleasant surprise,” said Catron. “Having these two performing the way they are right now is the key reason we are where we are after the first month of play.”

Catron was full of praise for his Little Flyers so far, but he was quick to reiterate that there was a lot of hockey left to be played. His team is off to a great start, reminiscent of the start the Little Flyers had a few years back, but Catron knows challenges await his team. The EHL is a difficult league and at some point, the team will need to overcome adversity, possibly as soon as this coming month.

“We have a pretty tough schedule coming up here in October,” said Catron. “We have a couple games against division rivals, plus a contest against the New Hampshire Avalanche who won last year’s championship. We’ll know who we are at the end of the month.”
