EHL Team Puts Together Solid Month of September, Turns to October

BEDFORD, MA -- This season is the 6th year of the Eastern Hockey League (EHL), as it was originally formed just prior to the start of the 2013-14 campaign. For the East Coast Wizards, they joined the EHL in year #2 of its existence, and have made forward strides in each season to date. The pattern has held true this year, as the Wizards just capped off the best month of September they’ve ever had in the history of their franchise.

Looking back on the past 4 seasons of Wizards hockey, the team has never won more than 2 total games in the month of September. That was until this year however, as the Wizards kicked off the 2018-19 season with a record of 4-1-0 in the opening month. Even more to the point, the Wizards’ 4 wins during the month of September is equal to the total wins they have combined from September of 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2017.

“It’s pretty well-known amongst the staff, that we’ve got off to slow starts in the past,” said Wizards head coach and general manager Freddy Meyer. “This year we made it a key goal of ours to not let that happen again. It wasn’t from a lack of effort over the past 4 seasons, but rather, it was more a matter of finding that instant chemistry. For this group, they stick around the rink for hours both before and after practice. They’ve put in the work on and off the ice, and they’ve done so together. When you grow us a team, you become more successful as a team, and we love the group we have this year. I am looking forward to seeing how we do in October, November, and the rest of the 2018-19 season.”

After dropping the season opener to the Wolves back on September 14th, the Wizards rattled off 4 straight wins over the Knights, Wolves, Express, and Applecore. Over the course of that stretch the Wizards were led by solid goaltending between the pipes, and balanced scoring. As Meyer mentioned, this year’s team has been spending a great deal of time together, and the results prove just that.

The Wizards did drop the first game in October, but with a record of 4-2-0 heading into Columbus Day Weekend, the players and the staff feel great about the spot they are in this year.

The month of October includes 8 more games for the Wizards, and you can catch them all on HockeyTV. Also, be sure to keep up on all things Wizards at ecwjrhockey.com or by searching #BringTheMagic on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
